I have always wanted one of these – maybe this christmas my wish will come true. Is this the ultimate in retro gadget gifts?
Mathmos have been making lava lamps in Poole, Dorset for over 40 years. Edward Craven-Walker invented the iconic light-source in 1963, and was a hit throughout the sixties. Sadly, the 1970s and ’80s (a.k.a the decades that style forgot) weren’t kind to Mathmos and their lamps. Sales slumped as people bought – and lets be honest here – a load of tacky rubbish. Luckily for Mathmos (and us!) people regained their fashion sense sometime in the ’90s, and retro became cool – lava lamps especially so.
The Lava Lamp is a classic retro design but this newer modern lava lamp called ”Fluidium” looks ubercool. Designed 27 years after the original by Ross Lovegrove (and still made here in the UK, in Poole), the larger-than-life Fluidium comes alive in luminous green or yellow when you switch it on.
You can buy the Fluidium direct from Mathmos for about £50, but we recommend you don’t. The official website doesn’t work on modern web browsers like Firefox. And besides, you can buy it cheaper elsewhere!
A modern classic, buy it for £44.95 from feelingchilled.com
