So, you know that everyone is worried about kids being unfit, unhealthy and overweight. Well the lovely men at Fisher Price have come up with an ingenious way to prevent obesity in kids - let them do exercise whilst in front of the TV!

Brilliant, why didn’t we think of that before?

Smart Cycle is an interactive stationery bike (like the ones you find in the gym, only brighter) which plugs into the television and lets kids cycle their way to fun and fitness, whilst viewing their journey on the TV screen. They can ride through different scenes whilst steering around virtual obstacles and collecting items from the road, they can really get their hearts going in a race or they can stop for a breather and participate in a bit of interactive learning.

What’s wrong with getting on a real bike, feeling the wind in your hair and riding across the park and down the dirt track? What’s wrong with getting out of breath without involving a telly? To me, nothing - it sounds like much more fun, but kids will love the idea of having their own exercise unit - I mean I was ecstatic when I got an exercise bike in my room for my 14th birthday.

The Smart Cycle is going to be one of those toys that gets everybody debating. Some will argue that this toy is designed for time strapped parents who will then try to justify their purchase and others will say ‘why not utilise the power of the TV for some good, if it’s the only way I can get my kid to do some exercise’. I have no doubt kids will really enjoy this toy but as to how fit they will get or how much they will learn - the jury is still out.

I can just picture mums and dads by new year, working out on the Smart Cycle in a bid to shed those mince pie pounds that have been gained.

Love it or hate it, I think this will be one of the best selling toys this christmas.
