This brilliant invention has just won the Gift of the Year for 2007 at the Gift Association Awards. It ingeniously ‘traps’ sunlight and keeps it in the chunky jar so you can read by the power of daylight - even at night-time.
Originally designed by Tobias Wong, this Mason jar with its frosted glass, is perfect for trapping and emitting the light that it has captured throughout the day. Simply leave it on your windowsill in direct sunlight and using its magical powers, by sunset the jar will automatically begin to shine with a lovely sunshine glow, very similar to candlelight.
How does it work?
In the lid of the jar is fitted a solar cell which harnesses solar energy to charge up the rechargeable battery which is also inside the lid. This power is the used to light up the LED lamps contained within. LED light is low energy and very efficient so a fully charged jar will have up to 5 hours of light to share with you.

The description of the Sun Jar is ‘Free Sunshine Forever’ and it’s absolutely true! And because it is completely waterproof it can also be used outdoors in any season, during any weather. This solar powered lamp is energy efficient and green so is a perfect way to cut down on the electricity you use.
Scatter a few around the house and you can reduce your energy bills and save the planet at the same time.
A great gift for campers, festival goers and general night time party people, but also great to create ambience at a BBQ or party or even as a night-light on the windowsill of a child’s bedroom.
